New South Wales NAAUC History

New South Wales, and the Universities housing some of Australia’s most vibrant College communities, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, and Macquarie University, has been one of NAAUC’s longest standing members.

The Australian University College story begins in Sydney, with the creation of six of the nation's oldest and most storied Colleges. Similarly, NAAUC’s history begins in Sydney, with the inaugural NAAUC National Conference being held at the University of Sydney in 1967.

The Colleges at the University of Sydney have been central and significant members of the National Association since the role they played as founding members more than 50 years ago, leading the discussion on student leadership, the development of excellent young people, and the power of a College community run by passionate young people.

The University of New South Wales College’s have likewise been heavily involved in the Association in the past. Before the shift to trimesters, students at UNSW College’s formed the vast majority of those taking part in College state summits and NAAUC training programs.

Over the previous decade, NAAUC’s management committee has consisted heavily of Sydney and New South Wales representatives. In 2019, NAAUC’s President was a Sydney representative, hailing from Macquarie University. The last National Conference held in Sydney was the 2009 Conference at St Andrew’s College. NAAUC is looking forward to bringing the nations College leaders back to the most historic Colleges in the country in the coming years.
