Hugo Bennett

Hugo has been a part of the St Johns XXIII community at the Australian National University since 2023. During his time there he has thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from all over Australia and Singapore, making new friends and learning about their different experiences. Hugo has enjoyed working to find the balance between university expectations, social life and more broader necessities such as work and fitness. As he moves into his third year in college, Hugo is contributing to his community as the President, following an enjoyable year being a Senior Resident in 2024. He is excited to work with the Student Services team to continue building a safe, respectful, inclusive and fun community for everyone. Hugo feels his role as college President will encourage him to learn more about the nuances of what makes a diverse place such as a college thrive. Finally, Hugo also looks forward to working with the ANU community more broadly to further the experience of current and future students.

ACT STATE VISION

  • Strengthening Intercollegiate Relations

NAAUC BELIEVES IN THE POWER OF STRONG INTERCOLLEGE RELATIONS IN BRINGING COLLEGES TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE POSITIVE OUTCOMES ON A LARGE SCALE.

NAAUC is a strong believer in the power that intercollege relationships can have in creating meaningful changes that extend beyond the walls of any one residence. Strong intercollege bonds bring students together from a variety of backgrounds with one commonality, being members of college communities. Interdigitation between colleges allows for some of the most powerful conversations within residential environments as colleges are given the opportunity to grow and capitalize on the sharing of knowledge. Within the ACT, NAAUC’s vision is to build upon the interconnectedness of colleges within the jurisdiction to celebrate the concept of colleges being shared spaces in which future leaders are created.

National Conference 2025

Details Coming Soon

NAAUC National Conference creates a space where students from across Australia come together to discuss their residential experience and share their ideas about how it may be improved. With a range of academic seminars, workshops, panel discussions and keynote speakers, the conference empowers delegates, spur passion for leadership, and engage the diverse perspectives of students from residential communities across Australia.

The conference also provides unique social activities each day to allow delegates the opportunity to mingle, relax, network with their peers, and even get new ideas for events at their college.

ACT NAAUC History

The ACT and, in particular, the Australian National University, will always hold an important place in the history of NAAUC. The National Association of Colleges began in the ACT, with a gathering of Presidents and Senior students at the ANU in 1968.

The Australian National University’s policy of guaranteeing accommodation to interstate and international students has created a vibrant on campus community, which has deep roots with the National Association.

The ACT Colleges and Halls have been strongly represented in NAAUC’s Executive Committee over previous decades. In the past ten years, NAAUC has had representatives hailing from Burton & Garron, John XXIII, Burgmann College, and Ursula Hall. The ACT has had a profound impact on the direction of NAAUC, and many of our signature programs were created and implemented by talented ACT College Representatives; namely, our focus on empowerment of women in leadership and the development of better sex cultures within residences.

In 2002, NAAUC held its National Conference jointly at John XXIII and Burgmann College, the last time it had been held in the ACT. NAAUC is very excited to once again be engaging with students in the ACT, and is looking forward to raising students in the nation's capital back to the national stage.
